A few Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) about the process:
  • How much does it cost to order the Virginia tennis license plate?

These respective fees are separate from any annual vehicle registration fees. You must renew your current vehicle registration with the Virginia DMV when it is due. The $25 Virginia tennis license plate does not include personalization of any kind. This fee includes the cost to ship the license plate to you.

  • Can I get a Virginia tennis license plate for my passenger car, multi-purpose vehicle, van or truck?

Yes, Virginia tennis license plates are available for passenger cars, multipurpose vehicles (i.e., Jeeps, Blazers, and motor homes), vans and trucks weighing 7,500 lbs. or less.

  • Can I get a Virginia tennis license plate for my truck, weighing more than 7,500 lbs.?

No, Virginia tennis license plates are not available for trucks weighing more than 7,500 lbs.

  • Can I get a Virginia tennis license plate for my motorcycle?

No, Virginia tennis license plates are not available for motorcycles at this time.

  • Can I get a Virginia tennis souvenir plate?

Unfortunately, souvenir plates are not available until after the plate development process is complete. Applications for souvenir plates cannot be included as part of the required minimum of 350 applications submitted.

  • I have a disabled plate. Can I get a Virginia tennis disabled license plate?

Yes, Virginia tennis disabled license plates are available.

  • What will the Virginia tennis license plate look like?

USTA/VA Tennis and the Virginia Tennis Foundation recently held a design contest for the license plate design. The top three design submissions were chosen by panel, and USTA members, as well as the general public, were able to vote for their favorite online and at several USTA/VA events.  The winning design has been chosen and is pictured below.  Please note that the design is subject to change until officially approved by the Virginia DMV.

  • How will the license plate numbers be assigned?

The numbering system for special license plates is usually four numeric and two alpha characters for a series. Examples include: 1001ZZ – 9950ZZ or ZZ1001 – ZZ9950..

  • Can I personalize my Virginia tennis license plate, such as “VA10S1”?

Yes, you can request that your license plate be personalized with specific letter and/or number characters. On your application please indicate your four choices in order of preference to increase your chances of receiving your request. The maximum number of characters on the license plate is six. The suggested minimum number of characters on the license plate is three as this will increase the likelihood of receiving one of your choices. The DMV will review your choices and determine availability.  The DMV’s decisions can be overturned by the courts.*  As an applicant during the development process, if the character combination you requested and paid for is not available, you will receive a production issued number on your license plate and the DMV will refund your $10 personalization fee you submitted with your application.

  • If I already have a personalized plate and wish to put the same character combination on the new plate, what do I need to do?

Please complete the application, check the box next to “transfer existing license plate”, record the character combination in the boxes provided on the application and submit the $35 fee.

  • Does the $25 for a non-personalized plate and $35 for personalized plate cover vehicle registration fees?

No, your registration fees are not included during the new plate development process. You must renew your current vehicle registration – in its entirety – with the DMV when it is due.  After the DMV issues your new plate, the $25 or $35 plate fee will be included in your next vehicle registration renewal.

As a courtesy, when the DMV is processing your application and notices that your vehicle registration expires within two months, they will renew it for one year and send you a bill.

If your existing vehicle registration is a multi-year registration, the DMV will send you a bill for the cost of your plate for the second year of your registration.

  • How much does it cost to personalize my Virginia tennis license plate?

Personalization of your Virginia tennis license plate costs an additional $10 annually. This amount along with the $25 fee must be included with your application, for a total of $35 to personalize your plate.

  • How much of the cost of the plates actually go to the Virginia Tennis Foundation?

Once the number of Virginia tennis license plates sold reaches 1,000, then $15 of the $25 fee will go to the Foundation for each plate sold thereafter.

  • Is the $25 annual fee ($35 with personalization) tax deductible?

Yes, but only after the first 1,000 new Virginia tennis license plates are issued is a portion of the $25 fee ($35 fee with personalization) tax deductible.  Fees for the first 1,000 license plates issued (including the 450 presale applications) are not tax deductible.   USTA/VA Tennis will post this information on the USTA/VA Tennis website once the benchmark is reached.

  • What are my payment options?

Pre-payments can now be made ONLINE with a credit card, or by check made payable and sent to the Virginia Tennis Foundation.  Once the plate has been approved and is available through the Dept. of Motor Vehicles, the plates may then be purchased from and the annual fee paid to the Virginia Dept. of Motor Vehicles by check or credit card.  After the first 1,000 plates are sold, $15 of the proceeds from each plate will go to the Virginia Tennis Foundation.

  • How long will it take to receive my Virginia tennis license plate once I submit my prepaid application?

Virginia Tennis Foundation is required to submit at least 450 prepaid applications by December 1st, 2012 to the Virginia General Assembly for a bill to be passed for the plate.  Once the bill has passed, the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles will recieve the minimum number of applications from the Virginia Tennis Foundation and will begin production on the plates. The DMV estimates that the process will take about nine months once approval has been granted by both the state legislature and the DMV.  Most likely, Virginia tennis license plates will be issued by the DMV during spring/summer 2013.   The Virginia Tennis Foundation thanks you in advance for your patience.

Please note that personalized license plates will require special handling and applicants should plan to allot additional time for delivery.

  • Where will my Virginia tennis license plates be sent?

Your new plates will be mailed to the address on your DMV customer record.  If you change your address prior to or during the processing of your application, please contact the DMV at 1-866-368-5463 to update your customer record.  Your order will include one set of plates – one for the front and back of your car, year and month decals, and a new vehicle registration card.

* The combination of characters used to personalize your license plate must not violate the DMV’s personalized plate policy. The DMV reserves the right to refuse issuance of any combination of objectionable characters if they, in any way, carry a connotation that may be reasonably seen by a person viewing a license plate as 1) profane, obscene or vulgar in nature, 2) sexually explicit or graphic, 3) excretory related, 4) describing intimate body parts or genitals, 5) describing drug culture or use, 6) condoning or encouraging violence, 7) describing illegal activities or substances, 8) socially, racially, ethnically offensive or disparaging.
